| MIKE has been at the forefront of a sea change in rap since the late 2010s, pioneering a dreamlike brand of production that works in splintered, granular samples and staggered beats and delving into deep, often painful emotions with his lyrical content. Burning Desire is one of the strongest points in his prolific output, showcasing his distinctive flows and beatmaking style in a way thats slightly more accessible than earlier work, but still maintaining an inherent rawness. MIKE produced most of the instrumentals on Burning Desire, and they range from the abstract monotone stumble of "Dambe" to more energetic blasts like the triumphantly funky "Sixteens," splitting the difference on off-time burners like "Zap!" or the drunken sway of "What U Say U Are." Frequent collaborator Earl Sweatshirt guests on standout track "plz dont cut my wings," a sorrowful song consisting of little more than a funereal orchestral loop, skeletal drums, and both rappers downtrodden vocal performances. Elsewhere on the lengthy track list, MIKE is joined by rapper Larry June, vocalist Mark William Lewis, and, on "U Think Maybe?," the beat slowly dissolves to make space for live interplay between saxophonist Venna and vocalist Liv.e. A handful of ambient detours add even more depth to the production, making for one of MIKEs most musically nuanced efforts in an already boundary-pushing catalog. Hes still ahead of his time in 2023, but Burning Desire is the kind of rule-breaking music that tends to be looked back on years later as the point where entire genres shifted. ~ Fred Thomas |
