| 様々なカルチャー・ムーヴメ[ ントが生まれ、ヒップホップが芽吹いたカリフォルニアの豊かな土壌で"ジェネレーションをレペゼンする才能"として注目を集め続けるロサンゼルス出身のラッパー、アール・スウェットシャツ。 奇才の最新声明『SICK!』が配信に続きアナログLPでの発売が決定! オルタナティヴ・ヒップホップ・クルー、ODD FUTUREの一員として活躍し、今はソロ・アーティストとして"ジェネレーションをレペゼンする才能"として注目を集め続けるロサンゼルス出身のラッパー、アール・スウェットシャツ。様々なカルチャー・ムーヴメントが生まれ、ヒップホップが芽吹いたカリフォルニアの豊かな土壌で南アフリカの詩人で政治活動家の父親Keoraptse Kgositsileと、カリフォルニア大法学部の教授を務めるCheryl Harrisの元に生まれ育った彼は、2008年頃からラッパーとしての活動をスタート。最初はスライ・テンデンシーズの名で活動していたが、タイラー・ザ・クリエイターに誘われODD FUTUREに加入した頃からアール・スウェットシャツを名乗るようになったという。そんな彼がシーンの注目を集めるようになったのは、当時16歳だった彼が2010年にドロップした、タイラー・ザ・クリエイターとレフト・ブレインがプロデュースを手掛けた『EARL』だった。しかしそのリリース直後、シーンから一時姿を消してしまう。後のインタビューによると、彼は"友人たちから悪い影響を受けている"という理由で母親によりサモアの青少年向け全寮制の更生施設へ入ることになったため、音楽活動を一時的に休止していたという。 サモアから帰還した彼は、音楽活動を再開。18歳でColumbiaとの契約を手にする。2013年にリリースされたメジャー・デビュー作『DORIS』は、全米ラップ・アルバムチャート1位、全米アルバム・チャートでも5位を獲得。さらに同年続けてセカンド・アルバム『I DON'T LIKE SHIT, I DON'T GO OUTSIDE』を発表し、その後3年ほどの期間を置き、2018年サード・アルバム『SOME RAP SONGS』をリリース。制作時に父親が他界した影響が色濃く出たアブストラクトな作品は、彼のリリシストとしての独創性と深い世界観、そして時には実験的にも思えるプロダクションは、PitchforkやThe Wallstreet Journal、GQやThe New York Timesなどのメディアから高く評価された。(1/2) |

| その彼が2019年の『FEET OF CLAY』に続く新たなスタジオ・アルバム『SICK!』が昨年1月の配信に続き、アナログLPで発売となる。コロナ禍のパンデミックやロックダウンの後にレコーディングされた本作には、アルバムに先んじてリリースされたシングル「2010」や、Armand Hammerをフィーチャーした「Tabula Rasa」、そして「Titanic」など全10曲が収録されている。アルバムには、ZelooperzやNak-el Smith、Black Noi$e、そしてThe Alchemistなどがフィーチャリング・アーティストやプロデューサーとして参加している。 本作『SICK!』について、アール・スウェットシャツは次のように語っている。 「『SICK!』は世界的なコロナウイルスのパンデミックとそれに続くロックダウンをきっかけにレコーディングした10曲を収めたささやかな作品だ。ウイルスが流行する前、俺は母と一緒に読んでいた本(『The People Could Fly』)にちなんで名付けたアルバムに取り組んでいた。ロックダウンが起こると、人々はもう飛ぶことができなくなった。賢者は芸術は人生を模倣すると言った。人々は病んでいった。人々は怒り、孤立し、落ち着きを失っていた。俺はその混乱に身を乗り出した。ここに収録されている曲は、俺が息をつくことができた時に生まれたものだ。素晴らしいZelooperz、Armand Hammer、そして親友のThe AlchemistとBlack Noi$eに平和と愛を。そしてみんなに平和と愛を」(2/2) |

| A lot happened in the time between Earl Sweatshirts dizzying and beautiful 2018 album Some Rap Songs and its proper follow-up Sick!. In addition to becoming a father, the rapper wrote and recorded the album as the COVID-19 global pandemic unfolded. While Some Rap Songs saw Earl processing personal grief and societal change through a filter of glitchy, dreamlike production, Sick! carries the specific dread and anxiety of the era it was created in while paradoxically communicating a sense of heightened purpose and clarity. Earls lyrics have grown more dense and layered with meaning since his teenage days in Odd Future, and Sick! is a new tier of the kind of intricate wordcraft thats been evolving throughout his solo albums. With these ten tracks, Earls poetic, spiritual, and surreally detailed rhymes distill huge concepts into single bars, saying so much with so little that the lyrics can seem scattershot until theyre more closely examined. Opening track "Old Friend" captures the isolation and worry of the onset of COVID-19 in just 79 seconds, while "2010" is a psychedelic sprawl of nostalgia. Earls verses on the Armand Hammer-assisted "Tabula Rasa" are heady and introspective, reflecting on staying centered in the midst of endless chaos. Vocals and instrumentals sometimes blurred on Some Rap Songs, and its ominous lo-fi 2019 follow-up EP Feet of Clay, but voices are high in the mix on Sick!, emphasizing the complexity and vividness of the lyrics. Much like the projects that immediately preceded it, the production here is just as big a factor in what makes Sick! so powerful. Navy Blues murky, lumbering beat drives the title track, the Alchemist chops up scratchy jazz samples for "Lye" and "Old Friend," and Black Noi$e delivers instrumentals that explore futuristic synths and tense atmospheres on some songs and shift to the weary guitar loop and sentimental piano figures that make up closing track "Fire in the Hole." Sick! is brief, with just ten songs clocking in at around 24 minutes, but every move is placed with intention and forethought. Sharp, direct, and fluid in a way thats almost supernatural, Sick! perfectly conveys the duality of frustration and drive to persevere that arises from living through exceptionally difficult times. ~ Fred Thomas |
