| 1991年ジョン・シングルトン監督映画『Boyz N the Hood』のサウンドトラック・アルバムが初の2LP仕様で発売! 2019年4月に51歳で早逝したジョン・シングルトン監督による1991年映画『Boyz N the Hood』のサウンドトラック・アルバムが初の2LP仕様で復刻。1991年7月9日のオリジナル・リリースでは1LP仕様。これに当時はCDのみのボーナス・トラックだったQuincy Jones「Setembro」とStanley Clarke「Black On Black Crime」の2曲を追加しての2LP仕様が実現。 ジョン・シングルトンの初監督作品だった『Boyz N The Hood』のサントラは、初期ギャングスタ・ラップやR&B、ファンク、ジャズを全編でフィーチャー。アイス・キューブのウェストコースト・ギャングスタ・マニフェスト「How To Survive In South Central」、テヴィン・キャンベルのニュー・ジャック・スウィング・チューン「Just Ask Me To (feat. Chubb Rock)」、メイン・ソースのイースト・コースト・ラップ「Just A Friendly Game Of Baseball (Remix)」等々、シングルトン監督の嗜好がフルに発揮されている。 次世代の映画と称された『Boyz N The Hood』は、アイス・キューブ、キューバ・グッディング・ジュニア、モリス・チェスナット、ローレンス・フィッシュバーン他が出演。LAサウス・セントラルで育った幼馴染3人の物語を描いた作品で、このサントラは全米アルバム・チャートで12位を記録。1990年3月の『House Party』、1991年1月の『New Jack City』に続くヒット・アルバムとなった。 180g重量盤ブラック・ヴァイナル2枚組。 |

| John Singleton's debut as a director, Boyz N the Hood, was naturally compared to other urban dramas that came out during the early '90s -- such as New Jack City, Straight out of Brooklyn, Menace II Society, Fresh, Juice, and South Central. While the soundtrack for South Central was heavy on late-'70s and early-'80s funk, the soundtracks released for all the other films were filled out with up-to-date hardcore rap and youthful R&B, so they too were stacked up against one another. Boyz N the Hood's soundtrack is uneven as the others, though it does contain a handful of tracks that no fan of early-'90s rap should be without. (Granted, most of them had already appeared on studio albums by the respective artists.) While none of the R&B cuts are poor, not a single one would be remembered if they weren't bound to scenes in the film. Bits of the evocative score, from Stanley Clarke and Quincy Jones, are also included. ~ Andy Kellman |
