| Released straight to DVD as an ambitious love letter to the famed four-piece from Boston, 4AD's ode to the Pixies is a long-awaited dream come true for rabid fans everywhere. Combining live footage, videos, and not one, but two documentaries, the disc gives love to the seminal outfit who changed the face of rock music and then disappeared all-too-soon into infamy. Recorded live on May 1, 1988, at the Town and Country Club in London, the complete live show features the foursome at their best -- stripped down, with their dynamics working on overdrive, this is the time and moment when the Pixies were at the top of their game. With 15 songs culled from their first two releases, the 40-minute professionally filmed gig has all the fire and charm that made them such a singular band to see. Presented in both 5.1 and stereo tracks, the sound and brilliant picture are nothing short of astounding, putting each and every video bootleg out on the market to shame. Additionally, the band's video collection can finally be appreciated as a whole, with famous clips like "Head Long" smashed right alongside little-seen gems like "Veloria," banned from 120 Minutes shortly after being aired. Also included is a new video for "Debaser," directed by 4AD's own Vaughan Oliver -- known for his design work on all of the band's previous releases. The good stuff continues with the 30-minute "On the Road" documentary, a collection of extremely rare footage from the Pixies' 1989 European and U.S. tour. Lensed by Myles Mangino, a tour member for over three years, the documentary allows the viewer to become privy to some of the first footage ever filmed of the band. Through German clubs the size of a closet to the Pixies' first festival appearance, the live footage on display is a treat, as are the candid moments on the tour bus and even in the studio. Finally, the extremely well-done U.K. documentary Gouge has been included. Featuring interviews with David Bowie, Bono, PJ Harvey, and more, this 50-minute feature chronicles the Pixies' releases and how each one affected its audience in different ways. Bandmembers Joey Santiago, David Lovering, and Frank Black (aka Charles Thompson) all make appearances as they document the story of what was going on behind the scenes through it all. Sadly, Kim Deal is nowhere to be seen, which is really too bad, especially considering how utterly charming she is in the previous documentary. Still, Gouge is something every Pixies fan should see -- and now, they can! With impressive menus that are sure to blow your mind when you first throw this sucker in, it would seem that this disc is a 100 percent home run -- well, not quite. The plastic-cased packaging isn't too impressive and neither is the Vaughan Oliver design (which is mirrored in the best-of CD compilation released in conjunction with the DVD). Yes, it's a small gripe, but one definitely worth mentioning for a band who's always sported stellar design aesthetics. Gripes aside, this disc is fine and genuine -- the stuff for which fans have been waiting. With the band re-forming just a month before this DVD's release, there's never been a more perfect time for a look back. ~ Jeremy Wheeler| |
