| 1970年代にはMuseでドン・シュリッテンのプロデュースの下、何枚かのリーダー作を残したケニー・バロンが、80年代に入り、シュリッテンの新興レーベルXanaduへ移籍して放った最初のアルバム。これはまたケニーがレコーディングした初のソロ作品で、脂の乗りきった30代後半の彼による充実したソロ・パフォーマンスを満喫できる素晴らしい内容となっています。冒頭の「Bud-Like」は、タイトルどおりバド・パウエルの「Un Poco Loco」を彷彿とさせる自作曲で、ケニーもまたバドのように強力な左手を駆使してバップ・ピアノの正当な継承者であることを鮮やかに証明しています。2曲目以降も、見事な両手のバランスとアイデアにあふれたフレイジングで圧巻の存在感を示しており、バラードでは豊かな情感を示す一方(エリントンの名曲M2のロマンティシズムは筆舌に尽くしがたい絶品の演奏)、2つのモンク・ナンバーでは曲の本質を鋭く捉えたプレイを繰り広げています。このアルバムが今もなおケニーの代表作のひとつとして高く評価されているのも当然でしょう。なお、8曲目は、以前初CD化の際に追加されたもので、同じセッションでの演奏ですが、元々は『Xanadu Anni versary』というオムニバスLPで日の目を見た1曲です。 |

| Up until the original release of At the Piano in 1982, Kenny Barron had yet to record an entire album of solo piano pieces. Although this would not to be his last in this context, it would be his most honest and representative. The set is a fine mix of standards and originals, with the highlights being a beautiful interpretation of "The Star Crossed Lovers," and a memorable original, "Enchanted Flower."
